I think you will enjoy Survivor, a personal favorite of mine in regards to his work.
I must once again encourage that anyone who likes his stuff go ahead and read his non-fiction book Stranger Than Fiction. VERY interesting and gives a lot of information on his writing in a roundabout way.
I just bought fight club, extremely hard to find![]()
I read Survivor a couple years ago. Seemed high on immediate entertainment value and low on substance; fast food fiction or something like that. Did I pick a crap book to start with, or is this guy just not for me?
ive read all of these as well and im surprised to see rant so far down...not his best book but no where near the bottom
my order and shitty breakdown:
Survivor- All time favorite book. Ive read this numerous times and have the audio book version. Paul Michael Garcia does an amazing job on the reading. his tone and attitude fits EXACTLY with Tendor. If you all have cd players in your car, pick it up at the library. You will NOT be disappointed.
Invisible Monsters- Again, a fantastic, twisted, ridiculously funny at parts story. Evie Cottrell is one of my favorite characters he has invented. And the Christmas Day scene when the presents are open, one of my all time favorites.
Fight Club- Obvious reasons.
Pygmy- Many people seem not to enjoy this book becasue of the languege it is written in. My advice, read chapter one, than read it again. You will understand how it is supposed to sound to you and you will fly through the rest of this book. Two of my favorite scenes to look out for: Chapter/Dispatch 23 and Pygmy's observation of Dodge Ball, and number 24, concerning his views on Thanksgiving. Hysterical read once you understand Pygmys views on America. Again, Paul Michael Garcia does an amazing job at reading this challenged novel.
Rant- The hard part about Rant is that it doesn't really start until Rant heads to the City, which is about half way through the novel. The Party Crashing description sounds like a ton of fun to partake in. I can't really discuss much about this novel without giving things away. Just know that Palahnuik plans to make Rant into a trilogy. Which I am very excited for.
Choke- Everyone seems to like this novel very much. It does have its moments (Questions from the sexual addiction hand book: Do you cut out the inside of your bathing suits? Do you cut out the pockets of your pants so you can masturbate wherever you are? My answer to all of these: Well I do now) and Denny is another of my favorite characters, but I didn't see why it has such a mass appeal.
Lullaby- Very interesting but not my favorite. Deals with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Good for one time around, havent felt the need to pick it up for a reread.
Snuff- Didn't care for it much. Found it boring and slow moving. Even when everything was reveled, I found it to lack something that all his other novels had.
Haunted- Aside from Guts, (which is still not his greatest work of writing) this book is a drag. If you have never read anything from Palahnuik, DO NOT START WITH THIS. It will ruin him for you.
The only Novels I have not read yet are Diary and Tell-All. Tell-All just came out this year and I haven't found a copy yet. Anyone who knows anything about this please inform.
